Calabria

Calabria

Calabria is located at the "toe" of the Italian peninsula. It is bounded by Basilicata, and across the sea from Sicily, or Sicilia. The region covers 15,080 km2 and has a population of only 2 million people. The regional capital is the city of Catanzaro, however Reggio Calabria is the main city.  It is mainly a mountainous region with three mountain ranges : Pollino, La Sila, and Aspromonte and its unique flora and fauna include the rare Bosnian Pine. Calabria is a land of contrasts, with temperatures below zero in the mountains in winter, and temperatures sometimes over 40°C in the summer along low valley areas.

The region produces excellent vegetables and is known for the hottest peperoncini (chilli peppers). Calabrian wines are usually very strong, with "Ciro'" being one of the most well known. This is most certainly a part of Italy to visit!
