The territory of Emilia Romagna consists of a wide plane south of the Po river, and a more mountainous area near the border with Tuscany, with the peak of Monte Cimone climbing to 2165 meters. Within Emilia Romagna is also the independent republic of San Marino, the most ancient in Europe, with a population of about 26,000 inhabitants. Its economy is mostly based on agriculture, tourism and the issuing of stamps and coins.

The Adriatic Coast is a very popular tourist destination with miles and miles of pristine golden sandy beaches. Winter months can be colder than the rest of Italy however, because sharp winds blow over the Adriatic from Russia.
