Umbria is a region of central Italy of which Perugia is the capital. It is mostly hilly or mountainous and is the only Italian region which is both landlocked and with no common border with other countries.
Il cuor verde d'Italia (the green heart of Italy), as Umbira is sometimes known, is famous for being one of Italy's historical oil producing regions: cultivation dates back directly to the Etruscans, who were among the first people of Italy to practice olive cultivation.
Other products of importance are pork, potatoes, cheeses, lentils, homemade pasta and cakes. Also worthy of mention are the vineyards which, thanks also to a favourable landscape and climate, have allowed, since ancient times, the production of high quality wines with diverse flavours and typology.
