Today Veneto is among the wealthiest and most industrialized regions of Italy. With Venice being it's capital, it is also the most visited region of the country, with about 60 million tourists every year.
Famously, Harry's Bar in Venice has brought us Bellini - a long coctail drink containing a mixture of sparkling wine (traditionally Prosecco) and peach purée.
Not surprisingly, many traditional specialities of the Veneto region are dominated by fresh fish and seafood from Lake Garda and the Venetian lagoon. These are complemented by seasonal produce, peas, courgettes, asparagus from bassano del grappa, radicchio from Treviso, and meat and cheese from the mainland. Pasta is eaten throughout the northeast, but more typical is polenta, made from maize flour, and also the many types of risotto.
